Policy area: Transport policy
Increased rail traffic can both reduce the climate impact and strengthen Europe’s economy. In that light, it is welcome that the EU Commission now wants to set ambitious targets. But cross-border rail traffic is a complex issue with many pitfalls. In a new proposal, the commission seeks solutions to known problems. However, Europaforum Norra Sweden wonders how a lagging railway network will cope with the increased load – and who will take responsibility for making it work.
On Tuesday, February 1, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions’ (CPMR) Baltic Sea Commission and North Sea Commission organised a joint webinar on how the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) can contribute to sustainable and economic growth in northern Europe. The hybrid event, which was broadcasted from North Sweden’s office in Brussels, had the pleasure of welcoming three members of the European Parliament (MEP) - Mr Jakop Dalunde and Ms Henna Virkkunen in person, and Mr Erik Bergkvist joining us online.
The political network Europaforum Northern Sweden has adopted a position paper on the EU’s new Arctic policy launched on October the 13th 2021. Europaforum Northern Sweden welcomes the policy but underlines that the Arctic needs to be embraced by the EU in a greater holistic manner than the new policy manages to deliver.
On the 1-2 October, the EU train Connecting Europe Express rolled through Sweden with high-level officials from the EU. The Swedish Bothnian Corridor collaboration participated and arranged seminars and meetings. Pat Cox, coordinator of the EU-Scandinavian-Mediterranean core network corridor, stated among other things that the Bothnian Corridor is a very important and strategic project that creates great European added value.
On 18 March, the Swedish government decided to approve five infrastructure projects for further application to the EU Fund for the Interconnected Europe Fund (CEF), four of which are within the Bothnian Corridor – located in northern Sweden.
