2020 on December 2, Nils- Olov Lindfors, regional councilor of Norrbotten and at that time, president of the network Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA), sent a letter to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and her team, with an invitation to northern Sweden.

The background is the State of the Union speech delivered by von der Leyen on October 16, where the project Hybrit's production of fossil-free steel in northern Sweden were pointed out as a leading example in EU's green transition and for the European Green Deal.

The purpose of the invitation is to show what the regions in Northern Sweden are doing to support the green transition in the EU and what they could do even more.
