Pat Cox, one of the key actors in European transport policy, visited Luleå and Kiruna on May 30-June 1, 2016. The aim of the visit was to obtain a comprehensive view of the region and the transport system in Northern Scandinavia and the European Arctic.
At the twenty-second session of the Europaforum North Sweden (EFNS) in Piteå, the four northernmost counties in northern Sweden adopted five common policy positions on circular economy, reception of migrants, cohesion policy, wind power and biomass
On 21-26 February, a team from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) visited four regions in northern Sweden as part of an in-depth study. The ongoing OECD study includes 14 regions in the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) in Sweden, Finland and Norway. The study is carried out by this expert team together with other study groups, provided with questionnaires and data for an overall analysis of the challenges and opportunities the different regions and NSPA are facing, to further manage to create proposals for sustainable growth.
During its plenary session in Piteå on Februari 26, 2016, Europaforum Norra Sverige (EFNS) adopted a position paper opposing cascading.
The European Commission visited northern Sweden between the 24th and the 26th of February. Mikel Landabaso, Director for Inclusive Growth, Urban and Territorial Development, Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy, and Ulrich Krause-Heiber, Deputy Head of unit, European Commission, participated in Europaforum Norra Sverige (EFNS) in Piteå at the invitation of North Sweden European Office. During the three-day event, they had the chance to meet different stakeholders from northern Sweden and take part in activities in Piteå and Luleå.
