A large delegation of companies, academia and cities and regional actors engaged in hydrogen in the two northernmost counties of Sweden, Norrbotten and Västerbotten, joined forces during the 2023 edition of EU Hydrogen Week in Brussels. The initiative included a joint stand at the EU's hydrogen exhibition fair, a networking event and several roundtable discussions with decision-makers at EU level, organised together with North Sweden European Office. The aim of the joint effort was to spread awareness of the what is happening in northern Sweden and to welcome more actors to be part of the emerging hydrogen ecosystem.
On March 24, Kerstin Jorna, Director General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SME’s (DG Grow), visited Kiruna for meetings on northern Sweden's challenges and opportunities to contribute to Europe's green transition. North Sweden European Office had planned the programme which gave a broad insight into northern Sweden's industries such as mining, minerals, forests and tourism.
The political network Europaforum Northern Sweden has adopted a position paper on the EU’s new Arctic policy launched on October the 13th 2021. Europaforum Northern Sweden welcomes the policy but underlines that the Arctic needs to be embraced by the EU in a greater holistic manner than the new policy manages to deliver.
On October 21, the network Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) organized a digital steering group meeting. On the agenda were updates on the EU’s new Arctic Policy, the NSPA’s arctic investment platform (AIP), the importance of the forest to the European Green Deal, and the NSPA’s work forward.
As part of European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC) in October, North Sweden, together with the Brussels offices of the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) network and Scotland Highlands and Islands organized a workshop about EU's twin (green and digital) transition. The key speaker from the European Commission who participated said that the NSPA are leading regions and should take a more prominent role on EU level.
